Compensation and Benefits
Garvey Schubert Barer provides its lawyers and staff a package of compensation and benefits that is competitive with the packages offered by other highly regarded law firms in the cities where we practice. Associates have the opportunity to earn bonuses based on performance in addition to their base salaries. Staff members are paid year-end bonuses when the firm meets its economic goals. In addition, the firm provides the benefits listed below to regular, full-time employees and to regular, part-time employees who work more than 22.5 hours per week.
Medical and Dental Insurance
The firm provides medical insurance to all employees through NorthStar Administrators. Employees working in our Seattle and Portland offices may select Group Health Cooperative or HMO of Oregon, respectively, instead. The firm also provides dental insurance to all employees through Washington Dental Service, a member of the Delta Dental Plans Association. The firm pays the monthly premium for employees. The employee pays any premium for coverage of spouse or dependents.
Other Insurance and Disability Benefit
The firm provides life and accidental death insurance and disability insurance. In the case of disability, the firm provides a short-term disability benefit at partial pay for up to 60 days to qualifying employees. After six months' disability, our disability insurance pays 60% of monthly income up to a maximum of $10,000.
Voluntary Term Life Insurance
Employees may purchase term life insurance, subject to approval by the insurer. This insurance is available in units of $10,000, with the premium based on age. The amount of the premium is deducted from the employee's paycheck after payment of taxes.
Parental Leave
Garvey Schubert Barer was one of the first law firms in the Northwest to offer paid parental leave. Our policy is more generous than applicable state and federal law. It is standard practice for men as well as women to avail themselves of this policy.
Sabbatical Program
All employees, staff as well as lawyers, are eligible for a sabbatical in their twelfth full-time equivalent calendar year with the firm, and every twelfth full-time equivalent calendar year thereafter. The employee on sabbatical is entitled to three months of leave at full pay or six months at half pay in lieu of vacation in the sabbatical year.
Retirement Plans
Profit Sharing Plan: After one full year of employment, employees who work at least 1000 hours per year are covered by the firm's profit sharing plan beginning the next calendar quarter. Contributions are made by the firm only and are discretionary. In recent years the firm has contributed 3% of the employee's annual salary. These contributions vest over a five-year period.
401(k) Plan: Employees are eligible to participate in the firm's 401(k) plan at the next 401(k) enrollment date following three months of employment. After one year of employment, the firm will match contributions of owners, of counsel and staff members, subject to IRS regulations, 50 cents on the dollar up to 6% of compensation.
Flexible Benefits Plan
The firm's flexible benefits plan allows employees to pay for certain medical expenses not covered by insurance and childcare expenses as well as qualified transportation expenses with pre-tax dollars. Elections are made at time of employment and January 1 of each year.
Employee Assistance Plan
The firm's employee assistance plan allows an employee or family member to consult with specialists who assist with the resolution of problems or concerns that may be affecting the employee's performance. Examples of the types of problems within the scope of this plan include substance abuse and mental health concerns.
Transportation Subsidy
Seattle office employees are subsidized $20 per month for Metro, Pierce County, Community Transit, or Washington State Ferry System monthly bus/ferry passes. Portland office employees are subsidized $20 per month for either Tri-Met monthly bus passes or Max monthly passes. Employees in our Washington, D.C. offices are provided, at their election, a subsidy for one-half the cost of monthly parking or $65 per month in Metrochecks for bus and rail transportation.
Vacation
Lawyers receive three to five weeks of vacation each year, depending on tenure with the firm and status as associate or owner. Staff members receive two to four weeks of vacation each year, depending on tenure with the firm.
In-House Legal Services
After an employee has worked three calendar years of continuous full-time employment, the firm will provide up to $2,500 in free legal services of a nature customarily performed by the firm, such as estate planning or real estate transactions. Adversarial matters are excluded, however. This benefit renews every five FTE years.
Bar Exam and Moving Expenses
For entry-level lawyers and lateral lawyers who relocate from other states, we pay the fee for a bar review course, a stipend or salary during preparation for the exam, and the bar application fee. We also pay reasonable moving expenses when lawyers relocate from other states.
