Diversity
At Garvey Schubert Barer we understand the changing demographics of our client base and the broader communities in which we and our clients are fortunate to provide service. We are not so old a firm that we are mired in a tradition of uniformity and homogeneity. However, we are certainly old enough to recall the ill effects of so limited a demographic perspective.
Garvey Schubert Barer actively and aggressively embraces diversity at every level of our firm. We do so through recruitment, by our observance of the principles of equal opportunity as stated in the Bylaws of the Association of American Law Schools, and by our support of and commitment to the BellSouth Statement of Principles relating to Diversity in the Workplace. We strive to increase diversity through our commitment to a firm policy prohibiting discrimination based upon age, sex, race, color, sexual orientation, religious creed, disability, or national origin. This policy applies to all phases of employment, including recruiting, hiring, job assignment, supervision, training, transfer, compensation, benefits, promotion, elevation to ownership, education, layoff, and termination.
Our desire for diversity includes an aggressive commitment to the advancement of women in the profession. As a result, women are well represented in the ranks of our attorneys and staff. More than 50% of our associates and approximately 17% of our owners are women. Women represent some of our most accomplished trial, business and employment attorneys, serve on our Executive and Associate Committees, and chair other firm committees and practice groups. In addition, several of our attorneys are openly gay and involved in organizations that protect and advance gay rights.
Through the firm's targeted advertising and recruitment efforts, participation in special recruitment programs sponsored by the legal profession, creative on-the-job training and work arrangements, participation in regional and national legal conferences relating to diversity in the profession, and commitment to community service and legal access to justice issues, Garvey Schubert Barer has taken, and will continue to take, a leadership role in increasing the number of people of color in our firm and in our profession. By supporting the work of our attorneys of color in the community, we share with that community the benefit that we receive from the wealth of experiences and talents that they bring to our practice.
