Join Us Working in Our Offices
Portland
Garvey Schubert Barer's Portland office is located in the Bank of America Financial Center, one block away from the waterfront of the Willamette River in downtown Portland. The office is within easy walking distance of the federal and Multnomah County courthouses, vibrant shopping areas, the city's downtown "Pioneer Square" (where events are ongoing), and cultural attractions such as the Performing Arts Center and the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. The city's light rail, or "Max" line, runs directly past the building, and the transit mall is within four blocks.
Our Portland office has approximately 55 employees. The firm encourages a supportive, team-oriented work environment not only within the Portland office itself, but also within its other offices in Beijing, New York, Seattle and Washington, D.C. Support between the offices includes case support, technology and library resources. The firm's non-hierarchical philosophy is evident in the same size offices for all attorneys as well as benefits, such as a sabbatical program that is available to all employees, not just to lawyers.
We are committed to maintaining a collegial environment and actively integrating all employees, attorneys and staff, into the firm. For associates, as discussed in Evolution of a Lawyer, the firm takes an individualized approach to each associate's development. There is an expectation that each associate will eventually become an owner of the firm, and we encourage our associates to take an active interest in matters that affect the firm as a whole. For staff and paralegals, this means involvement in committees that are critical to the operation of the firm, including annual evaluations, planning firm social events, and providing constructive opinions on various issues affecting the firm generally. The Portland staff meets regularly to discuss issues important to the performance of their jobs and the efficient operation of the office. Paralegals, like associates, are assigned mentors to aid them in their professional development. Secretaries are assigned "buddies" for similar purposes.
A wide variety of social events are enjoyed by all employees. These events may include summer whitewater rafting or horseback riding, picnics, softball games, attending local sporting events together, pool parties, bowling parties and a holiday party. There are monthly socials, and weekly "wind down" parties. The Portland office cultivates a combination of professional service to clients and fun social activities throughout the year.
Law students, lawyers and candidates for staff positions should contact our Office Manager/Recruiting Coordinator Carla Roberts.
