Join Us Working in Our Offices
Seattle
Garvey Schubert Barer's Seattle office is in the heart of downtown Seattle in the Second and Seneca Building, which is located you guessed it at the corner of Second Avenue and Seneca Street. The office is only a few blocks away from the King County and Federal courthouses, the waterfront, shopping, and other major Seattle attractions such as the Seattle Art Museum and Benaroya Hall, home of the Seattle Symphony.
Our Seattle office is a fun and professionally satisfying place to work. It is the largest of the firm's five offices, with approximately 140 employees. Despite its size, the Seattle office enjoys a supportive, team-oriented environment that operates in a positive, open atmosphere. It combines the very best aspects of a small-firm environment with the support network of a large firm. This support network includes a fully stocked library, a full-time librarian who holds a law degree as well as a degree in library science, legal research capabilities from every desktop, state-of-the-art technology, a skilled administrative staff, and an individualized attorney training program.
Garvey Schubert Barer is unique among large Seattle law firms because of its philosophy of remaining non-hierarchical. For example, every lawyer has the same size office, from the newest associate to the firm's founders. Many of the firm's benefits apply equally to attorneys and staff. We were one of the first law firms in the Pacific Northwest to implement a sabbatical program. This paid sabbatical program is available to all employees, not just lawyers.
We strive to integrate everyone into the firm. Staff and associates serve along with owners on firm committees that govern the firm's daily life and implement management plans and policies. For associates, as discussed in Evolution of a Lawyer, this effort means that the firm takes an individualized approach to every associate's development. There is an expectation that each associate will become an owner of the firm, and we encourage associates to take an active interest in matters that affect the firm as a whole. For staff and paralegals, this effort means involvement in committees that are responsible for the annual evaluations, planning firm social events, and providing constructive opinions on various issues affecting the firm generally. The staff meets regularly to discuss issues important to the performance of their jobs and the progress of the firm. Paralegals, like associates, are assigned mentors to aid them in their professional development. Secretaries are assigned "buddies" for similar purposes.
Although we take our work and responsibility to our clients seriously, Garvey Schubert Barer subscribes to the notion that all work and no play makes Jack or Jill a dull person. To that end, there are a wide variety of social events that are enjoyed by all employees. These events may include summertime hikes in the mountains surrounding the Seattle area, Chinese New Year, Cinco de Mayo or St. Patrick's Day celebrations, river rafting, softball, and parties (which may occur spontaneously on sunny Friday afternoons) on our 18th floor deck overlooking Elliott Bay.
Law students and lawyers should contact Elaine Jackson. Candidates for staff positions should contact our Office Manager, Carla Weitzman.
