Recently, 60 Minutes unfavorably portrayed lawyers who entertained a potential client’s request for help in laundering money in the United States.  GSB's Washington, D.C. attorneys Paul Hoff, Sean Griffin and Harold “Buzz” Bailey will discuss the key legal and ethical responsibilities of lawyers when asked to represent clients in matters raising issues under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, the economic sanctions administered by the U.S. Treasury Department and other agencies, the bank secrecy laws and the Foreign Agent Registration Act.

The discussion will highlight when the law leaves the lawyer no choice but to just say “no” to a client’s request for assistance.  The CLE will contain a short mock client interview, similar to the ones on the recent 60 Minutes episode that has caused great consternation amongst attorneys representing foreign clients, and will conclude with Q&A.
