PRACTICE LIMITED TO MATTERS AND PROCEEDINGS BEFORE FEDERAL COURTS AND AGENCIES AND MATTERS INVOLVING WASHINGTON STATE LAW.

Jeffrey Young focuses on litigation, with an emphasis on antitrust law, particularly involving the transportation/logistics industry and companies doing business in the Pacific Rim. For the 2007-2008 term, he clerked for Judge John C. Coughenour on the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington.

Mr. Young has worked on matters originating in the U.S. and Asia, acquiring a wide range of experience in competition law and antitrust litigation. Some recent examples include:

  • Conducted extensive fact investigation into possible cartel activity, taking primary responsibility for interviewing numerous market participants and documenting findings;
  • Defended major transportation/logistics company in putative antitrust class action with several underlying criminal prosecutions; conducted extensive internal investigation concerning possible criminal liability and potential civil defenses; gained expertise in multi-district litigation procedure and certification of antitrust class actions;
  • Defended Chinese mineral companies in federal antitrust litigation; gained particular expertise as to jurisdictional issues, including the extraterritorial application of U.S. antitrust law, and personal jurisdiction over foreign corporations in U.S. courts;
  • Represented large Taiwanese appliance manufacturer in response to Washington state attorney general antitrust investigation; negotiated with state authorities over scope of response and facilitated production of documents; advised client as to potential state and federal antitrust claims;
  • Defended Japanese ocean transportation company in Washington state indirect purchaser antitrust litigation arising from criminal prosecution of other industry participants and investigations by European and Canadian competition authorities;
  • Advised independent monitor of obligations under hold-separate agreement with the Federal Trade Commission

Prior to that, Mr. Young was based at Beijing's Qinghua University while on a National Security Education Program graduate fellowship from the U.S. government, studying the Law of Regional Autonomy for Ethnic Minorities in China. As a law student at the University of Michigan Law School, Mr. Young handled a criminal appeal for an indigent client as part of the Criminal Appellate Practice Clinic.

His professional experience also includes a clerkship position at the Felony Trial Division of the Cook County Office of the Public Defender in Chicago, where he participated in several felony trials and settlement conferences, and a successful representation of an Oregon State Prisoner in federal court.
