Stanley Barer is chairman emeritus of Saltchuk Resources, Inc. He serves our firm in an Of Counsel capacity by assisting our lawyers in international business matters and as a member of the firm's Advisory Committee.
Mr. Barer negotiated the resumption of the shipping service between the People's Republic of China and the United States in 1979. He is particularly knowledgeable about the U.S. political process and the determination of U.S. trade policy. He also has extensive experience analyzing legislative and regulatory issues related to maritime business and labor matters, including coastwise and intercoastal trade, relationships between subsidized and unsubsidized carriers, cargo preference laws, federal assistance for ship financing, and regulation of government-owned carriers.
He served as administrative assistant to U.S. Senator Warren G. Magnuson from 1969 to 1974 and as transportation counsel and acting general counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce in 1964 and from 1967 to 1969.
