Public Service Commitment

home our firm our practice our people join us resource center public service privacy disclaimer site map search contact Garvey Schubert Barer has traditionally encouraged our lawyers to devote 10% of their time to pro bono legal matters and given chargeable hour credit for work on approved matters. In 1985 we decided to go further and award billing credit to align the economics of our law practice with our stated values. We recognize that our right to practice law comes from the public and carries with it public obligations.

Garvey Schubert Barer is one of the charter signatories to the Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge initiated in 1993. In joining the initiative, we renewed a long-standing commitment to devote 5% of the firm's work to public service. In September 1999, we placed first in the Oregon State Bar's Pro Bono Challenge in the "medium firm" category. We had the highest number of pro bono hours, measured on a per capita basis, of any medium-sized firm in Oregon.

In 2003, GSB established the Dallaire Public Service Award to recognize staff members and attorneys who have made an extraordinary contribution in the area of pro bono legal services or community service. In 2007, our attorneys and paralegals combined to contribute 6,127 hours of pro bono legal work to the communities in which we live and practice. Valued at our standard hourly rates, our contribution amounted to more than $2.06 million.
