Public Policy, Lobbying and Political Law

For more than 25 years, Garvey Schubert Barer has been helping clients solve problems created or affected by Congress and federal agencies. By combining traditional legal skills with an extensive knowledge of the political process, we counsel clients and, when appropriate, lobby decision-makers to achieve clients' objectives. Our clients include businesses of all sizes, governments, trade associations, coalitions and individuals.

Garvey Schubert Barer has an active political presence in Washington, D.C., and the Northwest. Even though our practice is centered in the nation's capital, when necessary our lawyers can draw on expertise throughout the firm.

Both our lawyers and other professionals have extensive prior service inside government — as senior staff to members of Congress and congressional committees and as political appointees in federal departments and agencies. We have dealt with the most important congressional committees and such federal agencies as these:

  • Department of Defense
  • Department of Transportation
  • Department of Commerce
  • Securities and Exchange Commission
  • Federal Communications Commission

Our lawyers are practical problem solvers who work within clients' budgets to meet their objectives. We provide clients with critical information and insight, set out their options and recommend courses of action. We take a multidisciplinary approach to a client's situation — examining the legal, business, political, public, investor and competitive aspects of the problem.

We develop strategies that range from real-time, in-depth analysis of political developments to intervention through lobbying, administrative proceedings, litigation, public relations, coalition building and various types of targeted communications to decision-makers.

We also advise clients on the full range of "political" laws such as federal election law, ethics requirements, lobbying and foreign agent registration, foreign investment reporting, export control regulations and industrial security requirements.

Our track record demonstrates that our firm has the relationships and know-how to accomplish client objectives in the government.
