Dan Petalas, a white collar and political law attorney at GSB, provided information about the federal criminal enforcement process in a Boston Globe article. The Globe reported that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts has launched a criminal investigation into the practice of Boston-based Thornton law firm of reimbursing its partners for millions of dollars in political contributions, a potential criminal violation of campaign finance laws.

According to the article, a campaign finance watchdog group previously filed a civil complaint against Thornton with the Federal Election Commission on Nov. 2, a step that automatically triggers the FEC civil enforcement process. Dan explained that federal prosecutors could ask the FEC to abate its civil matter during the pendency of the criminal inquiry.  The agency could then resume its investigation after the criminal case is complete and seek to impose civil penalties.
