Former General Counsel of Federal Election Commission and Trial Attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice will Bolster Firm’s White Collar Defense & Investigations and Political Law Practices.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 6, 2016) Garvey Schubert Barer today announced that Daniel A. Petalas, the Acting General Counsel of the Federal Election Commission (FEC), has joined the firm’s Washington, DC office as an Owner on September 6. Drawing on his broad experience in both civil regulatory enforcement and as a veteran federal prosecutor, Petalas will focus his practice on white collar and government investigations, political law, and litigation matters.
Petalas has practiced for more than 17 years in a diverse range of government and private sector positions. As Acting General Counsel at the FEC, he managed more than 100 attorneys and legal staff and supervised the comprehensive litigation, enforcement, and investigative activities of the Office of the General Counsel. He also served as the FEC’s Designated Agency Ethics Officer. Petalas previously led the FEC’s Enforcement Division, overseeing hundreds of enforcement matters and investigations into alleged campaign finance violations.
Before joining the FEC, Petalas served for nine years as a trial attorney in the Public Integrity Section of the U.S. Department of Justice, the component charged with overseeing the investigation and prosecution of public corruption matters nationwide. Petalas supervised many grand jury investigations across the country, tried more than 25 criminal cases to verdict, and handled appeals in a variety of federal circuits. He also practiced as a litigation associate for several years at Vinson & Elkins, LLP.
“Dan brings unparalleled legal experience and a large network of contacts in the federal government and the courts,” said Bob Weaver, head of GSB’s White Collar Defense and Investigations Practice and former Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon. “His deep experience as a prosecutor and as General Counsel for the FEC and other government agencies give him unique insight and proven ability to assist clients who face exposure to the increasing scrutiny of the Federal Government.”
“I am delighted to have someone of Dan’s caliber and experience joining us here at Garvey Schubert Barer,” said Brad Deutsch, an owner at the firm who has served as General Counsel to the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign. “I worked closely with Dan when we were both at the FEC and I have seen his skilled counsel and advocacy first-hand. Dan’s expertise will be a great asset as we work to provide the highest level of service for our clients.”
Petalas received his J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law, where he was the Managing Editor of the Texas Law Review. Following law school, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Thomas M. Reavley on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. He has an M.A. in English from Texas A&M University and a B.A. from California State University, Fullerton.
