SEATTLE (January 2, 2019) Garvey Schubert Barer (GSB) today announced that Dan Keppler, John Knab, Victoria (Vicky) Slade and Matthew Yium have each been promoted to Principal, effective January 1, 2019.

“Each of these outstanding attorneys embodies the core values of GSB and consistently delivers results for clients,” said Greg Duff, Firm Chair. “Their promotion reflects not only their past successes, but also their promise as future leaders of the firm.”

Dan Keppler, based in Portland, focuses on complex business litigation, securities litigation, professional malpractice, class action litigation, appeals and alternative dispute resolution. Keppler also counsels professional and institutional clients on securities law risk management issues. He recently served as chair of the Oregon State Bar’s Legal Ethics Committee and is chair-elect of its Securities Regulation Section. He received his J.D., magna cum laude, from Gonzaga University School of Law and his B.A. from Willamette University.

John Knab, based in Washington, D.C., advises clients in corporate and commercial matters, and on matters involving government contracting and regulation. He represents clients in start-ups, mergers & acquisitions, equity and debt financings, restructurings, and licensing. He also advises companies selling goods and services to the government (both domestically and internationally) on a wide range of compliance issues, contract issues, contract disputes, novations, and bid protests. Knab received his J.D., cum laude, and his M.A. in International Relations from American University. He received his B.A. in Russian language from the State University of New York at Albany.

Victoria (Vicky) Slade, based in Seattle, practices in the areas of employment law and litigation, representing entities in both the public and private sectors.  On the employment advice side, she helps businesses maintain compliance with various state and federal employment laws and handle tricky personnel issues.  Slade also assists clients in resolving disputes with current or former employees, whether through early dispute resolution or through litigation, and she has litigated numerous employment and other cases through to verdict at trial.  She is active in pro bono and community service projects and serves as an executive board member for Seattle-based nonprofit Legal Voice.  She received her J.D., summa cum laude, from Seattle University School of Law and her B.A. from Smith College. 

Matthew Yium, based in Portland, focuses his practice on professional malpractice defense, real estate, securities and business litigation. He has represented professionals, hospitals, emerging companies and national retailers in the defense of multi-million dollar claims. Yium currently serves as the publications liaison for the Oregon Association of Defense Counsel’s Professional Liability Practice Group. He received his J.D. from the Northwestern School of Law of Lewis & Clark College. He obtained a Master’s of Professional Writing from the University of Southern California and his B.A. from the University of Colorado - Boulder, with Distinction, Phi Beta Kappa.
