Former U.S. federal prosecutor Dan Petalas was quoted in Reuters on the vetting process that social media platforms, such as Facebook, will be undertaking to prevent future meddling in U.S. elections.

Facebook has already stated that starting with the 2018 U.S. midterm elections, it will be mandatory for election-related advertisers to provide thorough identity documentation; however, it is still uncertain how rigorous the verification process will be. "If you want to put up a theme page for a group, in the ordinary course you wouldn’t expect that a vendor like Facebook would require that sort of vetting...the indictment really details an elaborate scheme that would be difficult to identify,” Petalas said.
